What we do
ASIAC helps our families and members
by:
Providing practical
help and information for first-time
adoptive families by holding Intercountry Adoption Information
and Education sessions. These sessions involve a panel of
intercountry adoptive families and experts and
they provide useful information on parenting the adopted
child, transracial identity, development of culture and
heritage, lifebooks, starting school and other issues of
interest identified in our ongoing research. Click
here for upcoming events.
Availability
of Intercountry Adoption Information & Support
Officers
who provide one-to- one support to families at all
stages of the adoption journey, with their own adoption
experience and those of other ASIAC members as their
reference point. They also liaise with government
agencies and other adoption support groups, to ensure
ASIAC members receive the most up-to-date information
regarding each program in a timely manner. Click
here for a contact list of our Information officers.
Encouraging
and facilitating contact between
adoptive families through discussion evenings, cultural
events, picnics, annual camps and more. These
events enable adoptive families to network, share adoption
experiences and provide mutual support as well as keeping
adopted children connected with each other and their birth
countries. ASIAC also supports over 15 playgroups throughout
New South Wales.
Keeping members
up to date via ASIAC’s
website, our quarterly magazine Adoption Australia,
email updates and telephone. Through these mediums ASIAC provides
country program updates, information regarding state and
federal developments on intercountry adoption issues, new
arrival announcements, upcoming events, current research
and book reviews, and
more. To join our email circulation list email our webmaster now.
Acting as an
advocate for its members on
intercountry adoption issues at a state and federal level.
This involves committee members maintaining regular contact
with DoCS, drafting submissions on legislative and governmental
procedural changes, attending inquiries, writing letters on
behalf of members and the like.
Managing
sponsorship programs which
support children-in-need in overseas countries.
The aim of these programs is to assist children
to receive formal education and other resources
they require to attain their full potential. Click
