How to Finalise an adoption

ASIAC has been helping families finalise their adoption for over ten years. For a small fee, ASIAC can help you with preparing the required paperwork and Affidavits. This fee is then directed to the various overseas aid projects we support.

The Department of Community Services (DoCS) invite adoptive families to proceed with finalising the adoption by making an application for an Order of Adoption to the Family Court of NSW. This follows your final post-placement visit and report prepared by the Adoption Assessor. Finalisation via an adoption order is not required for families adopting from China.

Completion of an Adoption Order requires the follow documentation - affidavits prepared by the adoptive parents, Delegates affidavits prepared by DOCS, a Court Report prepared by DOCS and a Police Clearance Certificate by Fingerprint Comparison.

For further information on how ASIAC can help with completing the adoption process, email our Adoption Order clerk, Julie Plumb.

Change of Name
With the introduction of the new Adoption Act in 2003, the naming provisions for intercountry adopted children have significantly changed. Clause 101(5) of the Act specifies,'The Court must not approve a change in the given name or names of a child who is more than one year old, or a non-citizen child, unless there are special reasons, related to the best interests of the child, to do so.'

If you are seeking to change the name of your child, you are required to submit an Affidavit of Special Reasons listing your reasons for a change of name.
